"When it comes to depicting hardscrabble Cleveland with bitterness, with affection and without allusion, he is simply the best. No one can touch him." Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer,

"His command of inventive pictorial design, dynamic spatial tension, bold visual clarity, and wry, acerbic wit. His art has authenticity and creativity."

Artist Statement 2007

The paintings I produce are visual documentation of life in many of America's inner cities. I continue to explore concerns of cultural, racial, and economic tensions between the haves and have not- with the over all theme being the community. My paintings depict a realistic look at what it's really like living in a community, where anything can happen at anytime and where life can often be fast, poor, and short. My paintings deal with many of the issues that affect poor inner-city communities in the United States of America. Issues like Poverty, Crime, Drugs, Education System, and Equal Justice for all, Police Brutality, Health Care and other day to day happenings.

My painting technique is acrylic on textured canvas, while using an animated, vibrant childlike imagery that is reminiscent of primitive works of both folk art and outsider art. Rough and gritty, primitive, vividly colored paintings filled with the hustle and bustle of everyday inner-city life. All while trying to depict the raw power of life in the inner cities of America , but with a deep since of hope for the many impoverish communities across this nation. I continue to believe that the major aspect of my artwork is to awaken the minds of people in our society. If a person is able to see deeper into someone or see deeper into something and grasp a greater understanding of the struggle of the poor and impoverish in America , then I feel my mission has been accomplished. Truly, life is not just what you see, but it entails what you experience, and what you understand from that experience.

Michelangelo Lovelace learned a thing or two from his mentor, the Rev. Albert Wagner. “He had his message, he had his vision, and that’s how he changed my work,” says Lovelace. “Once I met him, I started looking at my environment.” Known for his paintings, Lovelace’s My Hometown was removed from the Cleveland Clinic after three hours on display due to people objecting it showed a segregated city. Lovelace will showcase more of his provocative works during SPACES Gallery’s Bi-Lingual exhibit opening Sept. 5.
